NCLEX-RN Peer Seminar

Description: This seminar is designed to provide peer support for internationally educated nurses (IENs) who are preparing to take the NCLEX-RN. The candidates will work in a small group with a staff advisor/ faculty member to identify their strengths and limitations; develop a study plan, study independently and participate in a collaborative dialogue each week about their preparation for the NCLEX licensing exam. Students will take one ATI assessment exam during this seminar and have other computer projects.

Pre-requisites: In order to enroll in the course candidates must have completed the TOEFL exam with a score of 82 or greater or completed ESL courses at Level 6 or better; submitted an application to CGFNS for certificate of credentials. (Note: Completion of NCSBN learning extension course: "Acclimation of International Nurses into the U.S. Nursing Practice" is also helpful.)

NCLEX-RN Preparation Course

Description: This sixteen-week course is designed to assist nurses educated in foreign countries to succeed in meeting the requirements for nursing practice in the United States and the state of Illinois. Using the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Assessment-Driven Review program, students will identify their strengths and limitations, develop a study plan, work independently, and participate in collaborative dialogue to prepare for the NCLEX licensing exam.

Pre-requisites: In order to enroll in the course candidates must have completed the TOEFL exam with a score of 82 or greater or completed ESL courses at Level 6 or better; submitted an application to CGFNS for certificate of credentials. (Note: Completion of NCSBN learning extension course: "Acclimation of International Nurses into the U.S. Nursing Practice" is also helpful.)

Peer Support: Mentoring and English for International Nurses

Description: This seminar is a mentoring course for internationally educated nurses that will provide them with support and assistance with the U.S. nursing licensing process (credentialing, TOEFL, NCLEX preparation) and to enhance their ability to communicate in English.  The course offers an opportunity to review the various forms and processes needed for employment (e.g. Certified Nursing Assistant). Small group discussions will focus on Basic English communication skills. Students will have assignments related to completing forms, reading, writing and listening.

Pre-requisites: Completion of ESL courses at Level 4 or better; an internationally educated nurse; basic computer skills.

Cost: $75.00 plus $30.00 for Book

CPR Course

Description: The course is designed to teach the skills of CPR  (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-valve mask device, and oxygen), use of an AED and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). Two-year certification is issued upon completion.

Pre-requisites: Completion of ESL courses level 4 or better; this class is currently available for internationally educated nurses or anyone working in the healthcare field or anybody attending any health-related program of study.

Cost: $40.00 plus $5.00 for the CPR Card

English Conversations in Nursing

Description: The English Conversations in Nursing course is for internationally educated nurses. Small group discussions and exercises will focus on English communication skills related to nursing language. The course consists of multifaceted practical exercises in nursing topics aimed at exposing IENs to current practice in the United States. Students will have assignments related to journaling, reading, role-playing, Microsoft office, test taking, personal dictionary, writing and listening. A pre/post assessment of English skills will be conducted.

Pre-requisites: Completion of ESL courses at level 4 or better; an internationally educated nurse; Pre- assessments of English skills; basic computer skills.

Cost:$150.00 tuition;  $30.00 for textbook; $35.00 Testing fee _____________________________________________________________________

Description: The workshops are five-part series covering all sections of the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Students will practice with sample tests, learn strategies for each section and get answers to all TOEFL questions.

Pre-requisites: Completion of an ESL course at level 5 or better; internationally educated nurse.
